Sarah Wendell is a champion of the romance genre. I may be scared to have my books reviewed by her (they’re known to be tough over at her blog, Smart Bitches, Trashy Books), but when it comes to defending romance novels we all want someone as smart, sassy, hilarious and outspoken as her. I met her at last month’s Lady Jane’s Salon and she’s wonderful. I’m quite excited for her to guest host the next Salon and to read her book: Beyond Heaving Bosoms: A Smart Bitches’ Guide To Romance Novels. But first, she joins the roster of fabulous authors in answering The Same Six Questions I Always Ask.
1. If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Extra hours, with extra arms, and limitless energy. Barring that, the ability to only need 2 hours of sleep every night.
2. Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Benedick “Much Ado About Nothing.” Lord, he’s my favorite hero with the bantering skills. There are others but he’s my first love.
3. What is one of your most romantic moments?
True story: my then-boyfriend, now-husband and I went for Chinese food when we’d just started formally dating as opposed to being friends and bickering all the time. The fortune of his cookie: “Stop searching forever. Happiness is just next to you.”
4. Of the places you’ve traveled to, which is your favorite?
Up the driveway to my home. Any time I do it, it’s wonderful.
5. What’s your most used curse word?
In front of my family: “Crap”
Not in front of my family: “holy shit.”
6. Please take a moment of shameless self-promotion:
I am tremendously proud of our book, Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches’ Guide To Romance Novels, not only because I think it’s hilarious and savvy at the same time, but because it brings together writers, editors, publishers, and fans from different countries, publishing houses and subgenres to talk about the one thing we all value: the romance of a happy ending. So I hope you like it.

Hi Sarah! Thanks so much for stopping by today!
I was looking forward to your book when I first heard about it, but after reading the outtakes and extras posted on your site, I am extra excited. The Ten Commandments of Heroine Conduct is brilliant and hilarious. Makes me wonder: Have you ever considered writing your own romance novel?
I love the fortune cookie story. And it’s clear it was a brilliant decision on both sides to heed the cookie since Mr. SB gets, after all, a SB, and SBSarah gets a DH who provides pithy Hasselhoff book reviews. Clearly, a match made in fortune-cookie-factory heaven.
(BTW – yay, Maya power!)
I love the fortune cookie story, too! Made me go “awwww.”
(Nice name, Maya M!)
Being friends and bickering all the time! I like that little glimpse of the dynamic. Is it a more romantic moment retrospectively? Or did you both realise this at the time?
No, I was not born under a rhyming planet, nor cannot woo in festival terms.
