Planting trees is actually pretty easy. Well, it’s hard work but it’s doable and it feels so darned satisfying and good to have done it. I plant trees with New York Restoration Project as part of Million Trees NYC–the goal is to plant 1 million trees by the year 2017!
Here is a step by step account of a little tree I planted. NYRP does the smart work of figuring out what kind to plant where. This is a pear tree on a sunny hillside at a housing development in Queens.

The soon-to-be planted tree.

Next step: dig a hole!

Dig a little deeper.

Notice the worms. Worms are awesome.

Put the tree in the hole (after removing it from the plastic pot).

Fill in the hole. We have a planted tree!

Add some mulch to protect from weeds and help retain water and to look pretty.

Hmmm, someone seems to have been reading Eloise again. And yes worms are awesome as long as they are in the ground and not elsewhere!
I can’t imagine where else one might find worms.
Well, as for me, I don’t want to imagine where else one might find worms. *shudder*
And “worms are awesome”, that’s the coolest thing I’ve heard in a very long time.
The project is very cool, too.
Maya, you are INSPIRING! I am going to go plant a tree… soon. (Not today. I can’t today. But everyday should be earth day, right?)
Yes, EVERYDAY should be…is…Earth Day. Every tree counts, no matter when you plant it
And I should mention that this took about 30 minutes. Not long at all.
Nice job, Maya! Thanks for helping out NYRP. I’ve got some stuff you could plant at home, too…:-)
