One of my favorite rules to live by is from Mary Poppins: For every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and snap! The job’s a game!
That’s been on my mind lately because I’ve recently finished revisions on my novel (Hurray!) but now must turn around and write a twenty page final paper (oh crap). After years of grad school and novels, I’m used to this and have developed 7 techniques for getting through it. It may not feel like a game, but there are elements of fun.
How to survive on a deadline
1. Food. I like to hibernate while I’m on deadline, but before I do that I like to stock up with food and snacks that doesn’t require a lot of prep time (aka procrastination time) like fruit, cereal, etc. I also treat myself to crap like cheesy puffs (organic ones, of course).
2. Music. Gotta get a good playlist going. Plus, anytime I can visit itunes “for school” or “for work” or “for research” is a happy time.
3. Drinks, particularly coffee—but not too much coffee. With just the right amount, I am stellar. Too much I am a jittery and anxious mess. (Baby—I know my limit don’t say I don’t know my limit!!!!!). For a non caffeinated beverage that’s a treat I buy a bottle of sparkling water and add lime, or orange or grapefruit to make “soda” that I can drink massive quantities of and not feel bad about.
Food, drinks, music…Sounds like a party so far, doesn’t it?
4. Plan on it. This is key. I put cross out a few days on my calendar as “REVISIONS” or “FINAL PAPER” so I mentally prepare for it. That also keeps me from scheduling other stuff. Sorry I can’t hang out, but I’m busy writing my final paper.
5. Get help. My awesome and amazing fiancé walks Penelope in the morning so I can have a long interrupted morning, which is my best writing time. Sometimes help comes in the form of a take out dinner. Also, tell everyone who will listen that you’re on deadline—they’ll be understanding when you don’t respond to emails, etc. They’ll ask you how it’s going and if you’ll make deadline, etc—kind of like a coach.
6. Take breaks. In the afternoon, I take Penny out for a long walk, fresh air and a change of scenery. If I’m going to be working on a paper all day, I’ll take computer game breaks because it gives my brain a time to rest without me wandering away from the computer. Must watch ratio of games to writin’!
7. Give yourself a good reason to finish on time. Some of my cousins are coming in town this Saturday and they are fun people. I want to have my paper done so I can be a fun person, have a real party and night out! I’ll deserve it.
